Obligatory old school photo of mom, Sharon, and me. I don’t care what my future children look like so long as they have Sharon’s legs.
Please pardon our delay in announcing a winner. Maggy’s been on vacation and I’ve been in FL helping my parents move from their home of 35 years to a retirement facility. Our KitchenAid “Cook for Mom” winner is #167 Angie who says, “Having lost my mother-in-law and own mother in recent years, I will be reflecting on my happy memories of both of them. I will also enjoy basking in the love I will receive from my two girls and husband.” Congratulations!
We aren’t much of a gift-giving family, not at least in the ‘box, wrapping paper and bow’ sense. For us celebrations are about the food and the people and long-winded cards that wax poetic about our love and respect for one another. We used to do presents, but then the company and the menu were so superior (especially when we were old enough to add a splash of wine to the mix) that those earrings, blouses, and calendars just didn’t add that much to the feel of the event anymore. So we long ago decided to put all our effort (and money) into food lovingly prepared, drinks carefully selected, tables beautifully laid, music painstakingly chosen, and the moment we should share together.
On Mother’s Day, more than on any other special day, we do this for our mother because she is so worth it. She has the most generous spirit and giving heart of anyone I know. There is no person better at celebrating you than Pam Anderson. She cheers the loudest, supports the strongest, offers the most, gives the biggest. Not just to us, but to everyone in her life. So on this day, we do for her. And truth be told, she’d be happy with a grilled cheese, a bowl of homemade tomato soup and a cold craft beer, because that’s who she is. Though she is a great lover of memorable food, for her it’s far more about the moment than the dish itself. Her style is unpretentious and all-inclusive and I believe this is the greatest thing I have absorbed from all my years in her presence.
This year, we are excited to be working with KitchenAid on a special Mother’s Day series called, “Cook for Mom.” We know a lot of you will be looking for menu inspiration this week as you plan what to cook for your mom or the mother figure in your life.
Here’s the menu that mom and I created together. Today, we’re sharing the recipe for Cornmeal-Scallion Waffles with Caramel Corn and Maple Syrup and we’ll be posting the rest of the recipes throughout the week!
Raspberry Ice Bellinis
Asparagus Salad “Nests”
Cornmeal-Scallion Waffles with Caramel Corn and Maple Syrup
Strawberry-Rhubarb Galette with Whipped Cream
To help us celebrate, KitchenAid is giving away all three of the following appliances we used to one lucky winner! I think we all know that there’s no better stand mixer out there. Hands down. After using a far inferior blender for years, this is without doubt the Rolls Royce of blenders. And that waffle iron? The best. It lets you make two waffles at once!
KitchenAid Raspberry Ice 5 quart Stand Mixer
KitchenAid ‘Cook for the Cure’ Edition Pink 5-Speed Blender
KitchenAid Pro Line Black Waffle Iron
To enter, just leave a comment telling us what you’re doing for Mother’s Day this year! Giveaway closes on Friday, May 11 at 9PM EST.

My mother passed away some time ago and as things have turned out, I don’t have children of my own. This doesn’t stop me celebrating mothers day. Each year I gather a group of friends together who, for whatever reason, can’t spend Mother’s Day with their own mother. Plenty of food and wine and more often than not, mothers day lunch turns into dinner.

LyzaJo Jorgensen says
This mother’s day, I’m doing WHATEVER MY MOM WANTS TO DO. Here is why:
Nancy is directing and playing the piano. For 40 short minutes, each student is part of a team. They are all active members and they are all required to give full participation. Each student knows they must perform well because their test is not a multiple-choice or essay test. Their test is a concert. At this concert, 800 faces or more will be on them. The audience expects perfection—it’s something they know they will receive.
Motivation and passion are two things this lady encapsulates. She uses a Kleenex to emulate a penalty flag in her all-boys choir. She assigns three boys the role of referee and at each infraction (a lack of acting, poor diction, etc.), the referees are instructed to throw the Kleenex penalty flag. The referees are holding their classmates accountable; their classmates are working hard not to penalize the team. The next day, Nancy repeats the rehearsal. And this time it’s the all girls class and instead of a penalty flag, she starts out asking the girls about their weekends. And then, another downbeat is given…
The community knows about the greatness of the Arrowhead Union choir department; this shows in packed houses, where people stand in line an hour before, just to get a front-row seat. While community members stand in line, waiting for their prized seat, they are entertained with a visual exhibit. The display case in the foyer changes with the seasons. During the holiday months, there are candles, children’s books and holly. Before the musical, there are professional headshots and posters. Stars hang from the ceiling, a banner is overhead. The decorations are one small Nancy does to welcome the community into Arrowhead Union High School and warmly invite people to stay awhile and enjoy the music.
I am lucky enough to teach at the same place as my mom! When I am here late at school, grading papers or mentor students, I’ll often stop down in the choir room to visit. There is always an abundance of food, laughs and music. Often times, there is a student on the piano in the hallway; another is playing Beethoven in the choir room. Another student is helping hang a new poster. In every aspect of her career, my mom has motivated and inspired students to continue to perfect their craft and help out their teammates. She has also inspired me to be a better teacher—and person. Thank you, Mom!
Why do I love my mom?
Because she visited me when I broke my foot on Valentine’s Day, because she cleaned the lintstuff out of my hairdryer (when I didn’t even know that was possible!), because she wiped my nose when I was little, because she tolerated my friends even when they were annoying and ridiculous, because she didn’t laugh when I learned to play the violin, and because she never missed a cross country or swimming meet, basketball game or recital, parent/teacher conference or any other important date. Why do I love my mom? Because she’s the best and she always loves me!

I am going to make brunch for my Mom, favorite aunts and my boyfriend’s Mom and Aunt. Love celebrating all the fabulous ladies in my life!!
I really would love to win – my 1989 Kitchenaid mixer had a mishap during my last baking project (the screw cap attachment cover thing fell off into the bowl and jambed it while mixing!!!) Love the color and the glass bowl.

Spending the afternoon with the in-laws. All the appliances are gorgeous!
Jenn Paul says
Yall are ALWAYS so sweet about what you have to say about your mom. Truly she must know she did something right, and that has to be the best present a mom could ask for! I know all I long for is both my kiddies to say and feel such things for me one day!
Now, as for this weekend, originally I was supposed to pick my mom up from NY and bring her here to look at wedding dresses and hopefully pick hers out, but work schedule is seeming to make that impossible. Kayla and I however are going to go try on and order her dress for the wedding!
Knowing Bob he will have a trick or two up his sleeve..last year was my fav melting pot… this year he bought me a fondue kit, so maybe fondue in??? I’m hoping!
Happy Mothers day to you Pam, and Maggy I do so hope your future baby also has legs like Sharon! A baby with rolls means it is fed well 🙂
Jenn Paul says
uhm.. I just reread and saw that the waffle maker lets you make 2 at once. Bless their hearts! That would equal no kids fighting over who gets the first nommy waffle in this house LOLOLOL!! Genius!

My mom does not celebrate Mother’s Day due to religious reasons, but I do celebrate her other days of the year and pretend it’s Mother’s Day in my own head. As a mom myself, my 16 year old and I will be going to the beach with a packed lunch. I will then come home to a meal that I prepped ahead of time….boeuf bourginone over egg noodles. My daughter teases me every time I lust over the mixers at Williams-Sonoma. It would be amazing if I could tease her back and say, “Look what I won.”
Sandra Ruble says
I won’t be home for Mothers day to share with my mom but I am making her a beautiful scarf and sending a box of her favorite chocolates.
