Update: Congratulations, Cathy, the winner of this giveaway! Cathy told us it was a challenge to write just one favorite pie, but decided on “coconut cream, when it’s not French Silk Chocolate:)”
Exactly one week from today—October 25—Cook without a Book: Meatless Meals is officially available. We’re celebrating its publication (and Meatless Mondays) today and next week with a giveaway and a recipe.
It wasn’t hard to decide this week’s recipe. On Saturday I attended Pie Party Live, a gathering of a scant one hundred food bloggers at Rodeo Bar and Grill in New York City. Entrance fee: one pie, savory or sweet. For a pie lover like me, it was heaven.
I checked the pre-party pie list and the bulk of offerings were sweet. Since the party started at noon, I took a savory turn making one of the vegetable galettes from Cook Without a Book: Meatless Meals.
It was a crisp fall day, and I had a head of cabbage in the vegetable bin and a butternut squash in the vegetable basket. I roasted them, along with an onion, to make Butternut Squash and Cabbage Galette. But as long as you’ve got pie dough you can make a galette whatever season you’re in with whatever vegetables you’ve got around.
It’s Monday, so let’s celebrate. In fact it’s the whole point of Cook Without a Book: Meatless Meals—to inspire us to eat less meat, better meat, and to help make our meatless days fun!
A couple of weeks ago I asked which meat or meaty dish would you have the most trouble giving up if you become vegetarian. I loved reading your responses! Bacon and burgers scored high.
This week’s question: What’s your favorite pie, savory or sweet? As usual, you’ve got until Wednesday night, October 19th and 9 PM ET to respond and we’ll announce the winner Thursday morning.
Squash cheese pie in a gingersnap crust.
It’s a tomato pie/tart. Layers of ripe tomato, herbs and cheese… bake in a homemade pie crust!
Regular, beautiful, flaky apple pie is the only one I truly crave. Thanks for the chance!
I like apple or peach pie the best.
Any type of green pie or tart: turnip greens and cream, kale and ricotta, swiss chard and cheddar . . .
Pecan Pie , Bourbon, chocolate glazed, or any other concotion is totally my favorite!
Sweet – cherry pie
Savor – when someone makes me that cabbage squash pie, I’m sure that will be my new favorite!!
My children and I are vegetarians, so I’ll say savory veggie pies, but all my children will say sweet apple pie. So excited for your new cookbook!
Strawberry rhubarb! Very yummy!
Old fashioned minced meat pie like my grandmother used to make. I have tried making my own minced meat from her recipes, but they never are quite the same.
It’s a challenge to list just one, but I’ll say coconut cream, when it’s not French Silk Chocolate:)
Any fruit pie: apple, cherry, peach, blueberry – I could go on & on!
Does shepherd’s pie count?
This is a tough one ‘cuz I love all pies. Pecan pie is definitely up there and peach praline! Savory is any kind od quiche.
Apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Love it!
I can’t decide between sweet & savory. Banana Cream is my favorite sweet and spinach is my favorite savory.
I like them both – but tend to go for sweet. Both seem like an indugence though! Best wishes on your lovely cookbook.
Red potato and blue cheese tart in a rustic savory crust. But wait, mushroom and leek with goat cheese is really tasty, too! Both are easy and yummy.
Pumkin pie, especially this time of year
Chicken and mushroom pie!
Would have to go with sweet pie. Pecan Pie and Apple Crumb!
Sweet! When it comes to sweet pie, I do not discriminate. Key lime, pumpkin, apple, rhubarb, coconut, chocolate cream, lemon meringue… I love them all.
apple pie. or my mother’s covered slightly spicy ground meat pie.
White derby pie!
Any lemon pie for me, I have a thing for lemons…
Sweet. Fruity pies. I love cherry, strawberry, apple…etc. I prefer them on the tart side.
Mmm… Cream cheese pie is my fave.
Buttermilk pie is a top runner, but so is apple pie!
This is a tough one. . .but – by just a thread – I’ll go with “sweet”.
My daughter makes this lovely pecan tart which has chocolate and caramel (no custard) and plenty of pecans — it is sinfully good and almost like candy
Pumpin pie is my all-time favorite.
I guess I’d have to go with the old standby: apple pie!
Lemon meringue pie. Love the fluffy white peaks and tart lemon.
my favorite is, and always will be, pumpkin pie!
Does a pizza pie count? If not, then definitely anything fruit-based, especially delicious seasonal apples right now!
My favorite is pumpkin pie!
I love a savory mushroom tart.
So hard to choose! There’s nothing like a fresh Maine wild blueberry pie though, especially warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
It’s a tie between pumpkin and apple.
The new book sounds fab!
Hi Pam. That recipe sounds great. I have to say I don’t know much about savory pies except for quiche, which I love. I think the fruit pies would be my favorite, especially blueberry!
Our family favorite is Lemon Chiffon Pie…a staple for my husband’s birthday, Father’s Day and now anyday!!
Apple pie with lots of cinnamon.
Old South Pecan Pie – yummmmmmmm!
I have to say, I haven’t tried many savory pies. So I have to say that it’s got to be sweet for me. I really love blueberry and rhubarb. Delicious!
strawberry rhubarb!
Soooo hard to decide, but I have to go with good ol’ American apple pie. Preferably with a crumb topping and caramel sauce.
I love strawberry rhubarb pie with a ginger crumb topping. Yum!
I love the only chicken pie from Lost recipes ATK book…
I love almost any kind of veggie quiche. I’m not too much of a sweet pie person, but quiches and winter squash with gorgonzola, chevre, etc., and either apples or pears and a ton of melty leeks, topped with some chilled arugula are a favorite.
I don’t think I can ever turn down a piece of pecan pie.
