A few years ago a friend of ours who winters in Florida started sending us a case of grapefruit juice in little cans for Christmas each year. David and I aren’t big juice drinkers, and so some years we hadn’t finished the previous year’s supply by the time the next case arrived.
But then we built a beautiful bar, and we started to stock it. The grapefruit juice was among the many drinks I transferred from the pantry to the bar fridge. Day after day staring at that chilled grapefruit juice in the brightly lit, glass-front fridge made me want to start using it.
And so I developed a drink. I started by muddling (or beating) fresh mint leaves against ice to release its cool, fresh flavor. I added a generous pour of my favorite spirit: gin. And because I love the pleasant bitter bite of a Negroni, I added a splash of Campari. I shook them all in a cocktail shaker and served it up.
That was it. No tinkering here. As is, the drink was perfect… but it needed a name. Maggy nailed it quickly. Bowling is the last name of our friend, and although it’s a pretty little drink, don’t let it fool you. More than one, it’ll way lay you.
For the moment we’re good on grapefruit juice, but unlike in years past, we’re already looking forward to Christmas when we get our new stash of grapefruit juice!
- Ice
- ¼ cup mint leaves
- 4 ounces gin
- 1 ounce Campari
- 4 ounces grapefruit juice
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add mint; muddle to break up leaves and release flavor. Add gin, Campari, and grapefruit juice. Shake to combine; let stand a minute or so to further chill. Pour a portion into each of 2 martini glasses and serve.

Sounds delicious…and refreshing! I had a drink at my daughter’s bachelorette dinner last week, it also included mint and gin…muddled mint leaves, gin, tonic, and a splash of St. Germain…I have all the ingredients to replicate it tonight for TGIF…and will pick up grapefruit juice to try this one this weekend as well! Thanks…love love love your blog, and your recipes!
