Q. Mallory Asks: I don’t have questions about cooking, but I was wondering what kind of diet you used to slim down and keep it off. I have honestly tried every diet out there; the last one I tried was no sugar and no flour. I lost 7 lbs in a week and a half, but I wasn’t able to keep it all off. I’m having a hard time losing these last 15 lbs. I’m a running fanatic, but I just can’t seem to get these pounds off! What would you recommend?
A. Hey Mallory. I wrote a book in 2008 entitled The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight and Eating Great where I tell the story of how I lost 40 pounds. There are 2 ways to lose weight: exercise more or eat less.
There’s no way I can tell the whole story here, but quickly, I did 2 things. First, I healed emotionally and physically.Once I started feeling better about myself I was able to start seeing food as a way of pleasurably taking care of myself rather than a vice to fuel my overworked exhausted body.
I figured out a new way of eating, and during the weight loss phase I did short runs 2 to 3 times a day. So I opted for exercising more during the weight loss phase. Once I lost the weight I maintained it by continuing to exercise often and eat well.
I also feel I have a realistic view of myself. The fact is, I like to eat and drink. I eat well (most of the time!) and exercise regularly and my body reflects that lifestyle. Good luck as you attempt those last fifteen!
